ABOUT US

The valleys of Wilsons Creek, Huonbrook, and Wanganui are home to exceptional biodiversity, including threatened species and rare rainforest ecosystems. These landscapes strengthen and connect the surrounding Nightcap, Mount Jerusalem, and Goonengerry National Parks, helping protect vital habitats and the headwaters of the Wilsons River and Coopers Creek.

Much of the area’s native vegetation exists on private land, including significant rainforest, Brush Box and Eucalypt forests. Many of these communities are formally recognised as threatened at both state and national levels.

By protecting and restoring these landscapes, we help safeguard water quality, support wildlife movement, and build ecological resilience across the wider Richmond catchment.

Our Story

The Wilsons Creek Huonbrook Landcare Group was formed in 1995 and became an incorporated association on 8 March 2004. Since then, a strong culture of ecological restoration has grown across the valleys.

Our environment has very high biodiversity values, though also some severe threats that need managing – weeds, pest animals and the aftermath of floods, landslips and fires.  It is important that we operate at a landscape scale as most values and problems don’t stop at property boundaries. Many local landholders are actively involved in regeneration work, contributing to our “whole-of-landscape” approach and a shared sense of stewardship

What We Do

Our Landcare group is run by a volunteer committee, elected annually at our AGM. We support a wide range of activities, including:

  • Volunteer workdays and on-ground restoration projects
  • Community initiatives and environmental programs
  • Educational workshops, field days and knowledge-sharing sessions
  • Social events that strengthen community connections
  • Ongoing administration and fundraising to support our work

For many years, we also produced a quarterly newsletter, originally distributed to around 300 households. Today, these archived newsletters remain a valuable resource, capturing local knowledge and history, and are available in the resources section of this website.

What we offer to our members:

  • Technical and scientific expertise about our local environment.
  • Links to other Landcare groups, natural resource management, scientific bodies and professional contractors.
  • Community activities covered by Landcare insurance.
  • Support with through larger whole valley grant submissions and plans. ( Landholders are encouraged to discuss their individual property restoration ideas and projects plans with the group so they can be incorporated into these as they come up).
